How to prepare a cake board- video series

One of my goals as a cake decorating blogger is to help YOU be able to make amazing cakes for your parties and kids. It’s the whole reason I started cake decorating- to make my kids cakes. And while I’m happy to make and sell my cakes I charge what my time and talent is worth, and often that’s simply too much for most people. And as much as I enjoy making cakes I prefer making them for my family and friends. So I want to help make cakes so you don’t have to hire someone like me to have a fun centerpiece!

I was thinking, looking back on some of my long cake based tutorials, that thousands of pictures isn’t always the best way to show a tutorial. SO I’m starting a video series on cake decorating basics. I hope you enjoy it, each video is short, but includes my thoughts and hopefully some tips and tricks that will help you out! Some are more simple than others, but starting with the basics is key to doing better later on. I’ll do 1-2 short videos a month and I hope you enjoy them! My beginning plan (as in I already have the video’s taped, just working on editing them) goes like this:

What other techniques would you like to see video’s on? Using the silhouette? Carving cakes? Topsy Turvy cake carving? Fondant or Buttercream flowers? Or both? Frosting cupcakes? Using my paint gun to spray paint cakes (edible of course)? Please please PLEASE tell me if you enjoy this at all and what else you’d like to see! I hope this becomes a fun feature for us all, and if not I’ll stop where I am.

  1. I think this is a great series. I love the tip about making sure the lines aren’t the same direction… I never thought of that while decorating.

I think it would be great to show a video on how to carve a cake. I have always wondered how it’s done, and regular cakes can be so boring sometimes:)

Thanks for the help in my baking endeavors

    • Thanks so much! I hope it goes over well. I’ll add carving cakes to the to do list! Anything in particular you’d like to learn to carve? Topsy Turvy cakes? Shapes like the pumpkin cake?

  2. I think that either one of those would be great. With the pumpkin, it would be interesting to see how you get it so nicely rounded. The topsy turvey cakes would be interesting because there are steep angles that you have to balance and stuff. Whatever you choose will give me the basic concept:)

    • I have the video series laid out until December right now, so I’ll start with the topsy turvy, but put the pumpkin on the calendar for next fall… Maybe with a spring carving lesson of some kind, I’m sure my 4th will want some type of specialty carved cake in April…
