You are special birthday plate- Friday flashback

I haven’t always been a blogger, but I HAVE always been a crafter! SO every once in a while I’ll fondly remember something I made B.B. (before blog) and want to share it with you, thus my Friday Flashbacks! This week? My homemade You are Special Plate for birthday’s!

family-you-are-special-plate

I grew up with the classic red you are special plate (in fact I own one… somewhere). But when I saw this at a church craft day I knew I HAD to make one. I hand painted the cupcake wrapper, candle and flame (my favorite part- it turned out amazing). Then used dowels in different shapes to get the polka-dots. Then puffy paint of some kind (sorry, it was too long ago to remember what kind) for the words and the frosting and sprinkles!  Let it dry, paint over it with clear something or other and put it in the kiln (the teacher had one- how FUN would that be!)

Quilted Ruffle Tree skirt and stockings- Friday Flashback

It’s that time of the year! Tomorrow we’re decorating for Christmas! I know, most of you are already done decorating and have been for weeks. But with so much going on over here (doctors appointments, parties, computer crashes, semester finals-husband, not sleeping… EVER) it simply hasn’t been the priority. BUT I promised the kids when my Husband finished the semester and my party was over we’d decorate, so tomorrow it is.

I have to say I’m most excited about pulling out the ruffled quilted tree skirt and quilted ruffled stockings I made last year. I wasn’t even pregnant last Christmas, just hoping to be soon, so I made 2 extra stockings… Think that last one will ever get used?

I never did get a picture of the skirt around my tree, or the stocking hanging on my newly built mantel (STILL not finished after a year! GAH). That will be my goal this year, getting pictures of them actually being used! I’ve already started my Christmas baking! I think every “meal” I’ve had over the last 4 days has been 99% sugar… At least it helps with the whole up-all-night-with-Baby-boy-lack-of-energy thing I’ve got going in!

So what where you the most excited about pulling out this season? A favorite book? Movie? Decoration?

Dr Seuss birthday party book invitation- flashback Friday

These Dr Seuss Birthday party invitations are still one of my most popular and most asked about invitations!  I usually get asked if I am willing to sell them.  Since I don’t want to get in trouble for copyright infringement of any kind I do NOT sell them.  The next question I get asked is if I’ll share my images and text.  I made these specifically for our party and situation, so they wouldn’t fit anyone else’s party per se.  BUT I am willing to share extra pictures and a bit more of HOW I made them with you in hopes that it will help someone!

For the cover: I used this Cat in the Hat image, this blue background and a Dr. Seuss font to create the cover art.  I used Microsoft Publisher to create my books, but word or Photoshop would work just as well.  I just happen to used publisher a lot and so it was the quickest option for me.  I bought and used blank cards from a local craft store, but the measurements of the cards was off just enough that it caused issues.  If I was to do them again I would use normal 8.5″ x 11″ card stock folded in half for my cards.  The weird measurements was seriously the most frustrating an time consuming part of the whole project.

(oh and the difference in color of the two backgrounds must have something to do with my printer, camera, photo editing, etc…  This IS the jpg of the backdrop I used, I promise!

For first inside pages I scanned in pictures from the Cat in the Hat returns because of the images with snow.  Since the party was at the beginning of spring and we were just coming out of winter it fit the story I wanted to tell well!  I used the same Dr. Seuss font as the cover.  The first paragraph I took right out of the book, and went from there.  I am NOT an english major, but I tried my best to stick with the cadence and rhythm of Dr. Seuss.  The extra step I did, that is totally optional, is I used photoshop to edit out the little boy from the images I scanned in.  I only wanted the little girl because the party was for my 3 year old daughter.  But it was certainly not a necessary step, easy to leave out.

The next pages, I think the first one is from Cat in the Hat returns, and the second one is from Cat in the Hat.  I choose the first one because it had a cake, and fit with the party theme.  The blank erased spot had the birthday girls name (because it was a 3rd line it didn’t have to rhyme.).

This is the center page so you can also see where I put the two blank cards together and used my sewing machine, on the longest stitch, to sew my book together.

I choose a pretty busy picture (another one with a cake) so knowing I couldn’t add words to that page I choose a very blank page to set across from the busy page so I would have plenty of room for words to finish up the story.  It’s much more wordy than a typical Seuss book, but it got in all the info I wanted, food, theme, colors, crafts, etc…  I’m sure I could have made it shorter but I tend to go overboard…  Plus when your working in rhymes it takes a lot more words to get just one idea across!  (again I erased the birthday girls name from this page, but it did rhyme this time)

Again, I took the extra time and step to Photoshop the little boy OUT of the page image, but it seriously is not for the feint of heart, or Photoshop beginner.

dr-seuss-birthday-party-invitation-book-back

And finally the main party info.  This image is from the beginning of the Cat in the Hat book.  I wanted it all on one page, like a more traditional invitation, but at the same time it’s hard to get that much info into two paragraphs that all still fit the rhythm and rhyme of the rest of the book!  I think I’m the most proud of this page because of how well it came together (except for the Heaven line- but what else rhymes with 7?).  And of course I erased all the address/name info, sorry.  And once again I got rid of the boy from this picture, an unnecessary step but one I felt really MADE the book come together for me.

dr-seuss-birthday-party-invitation-envelope

Finally I created this envelope.  I use Microsoft publisher address wizard to print off matching envelopes from my address book.  The best part???  It still only cost one stamp??  I couldn’t believe it?  I thought for sure it would cost more, but I’m SO glad it didn’t as we sent out QUITE a few invitations.  It was one of the things my husband couldn’t complain about (cost wise).

Clicking on the picture will take you to the flickr page where you can download the full size png image and use it for your own invitations or envelopes.

I hope this helps you guys in some way.  I’m sorry I can’t do more, but I have seen too many bloggers get in trouble for copyright infringements and I do NOT want to be one of them.  If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I will answer what I can!

The rest of my Dr. Seuss party, cake and food are here

Totoro 3rd birthday party- Flashback Friday

totoro1998

This party is actually from my oldest daughters 3rd birthday! So 6 1/2 years ago! WAY before I got into cake decorating and back when I only had 2 kiddo’s! We were living in Japan and had been for a year. So finding party supplies and baking supplies was a bit difficult. I had so much fun though! This party was not only her birthday but our going away party as well, since we were moving back to the states a few weeks later. We invited everyone from church, our apartment building and some of my husbands co-workers. My in laws were even in town, visiting Japan for the 2nd time since we’d live there, so it was a really fun gathering.

Even before living in Japan we loved My Neighbor Totoro and other studio Ghibli movies. While in Japan we were able to visit Tokyo and go visit Studio Ghibli! It was such a fun year. Out of the 32 places I’ve lived Japan was my number 1 favorite. I would move back in a heartbeat and stay forever. In my husbands last job he was actually hired for a permanent position in the Tokyo Office but before he finished training the economy crashed and they canceled overseas appointments and that’s when we lost our job. Having that hope of living in Japan and having it crushed made it all that much harder when he lost his job. I love our year in Japan and looking back at these pictures is wonderful and painful at the same time.

ANYWAY, when it came time for her birthday a Totoro theme seemed an easy choice! I handmade all the invitations. This is way before cricuts, so I cut out about 50 of these Totoro shapes and umbrellas! Then cut out the eyes, stomach and back. Then painted the whiskers, eyes, claw’s, etc… I also wrote out the Kangi for the invitation! I don’t actually read or write kangi, but my husband does, so he found the right kangi for me and I wrote it out.

Since the guests were all ages from newborn to grandparents I had to have all sorts of different activites. We used our church building for the party so we had a nice big room for the party to take place in. I had a TV and DVD player in one corner for those who would want to sit and watch the movie. I had 2 different puzzles on 2 different walls for those who liked to sit and concentrate on something.

I also prepared some games that everyone could play. Since they do parties very differently in Japan they were all very excited to play some classic American party games. I started with my Totoro version of pin the tail on the donkey. I made a full sized Totoro. Since my supplies were limited to what I could find there I had to tape 16 poster boards together. I then pined it to my wall and started sketching. I penciled it until I was happy with it then painted him, leaving one of the chest markers blank for the game. This is a crappy picture, but it actually shows the poster boards pieced together best!

He was also a great decoration for the party room! He took up quite a bit of one wall. The movie is set in the forest so while I wasn’t allowed do TOO much to the room I tried to add tree’s to the walls and ceiling using paper and balloons! Overall I’m still pleased with how well it came together with what I could find!

totoro 3rd birthday party decoration

He was a little too tall for the birthday girl, but since 85% of the guests were adults tall was okay! He ended up getting bent into the wall. There weren’t any wall’s that were perfectly flat so it was the best I could do! Oh well! Everyone loved him, and they all enjoyed the game as well.

I also made a pinata. My first homemade pinata in fact! Lucky for me he’s kind of balloon shaped so it worked out decently enough. We hung him against the back wall and everyone was fascinated by it! In fact once all the kid’s got a turn the adults all wanted one too! It was a hoot! I wasn’t sure how many layers to make him so he ended up pretty strong. He broke off his rope before he cracked! Once he broke off the rope they kept taking turns hitting him until he finally broke open and we spilled out the candy!

Another game was guess how many Soot Sprites! This is what Soot sprites look like in the movie. They are these fuzzy black sprites that leave a black mess everywhere. They live in abandon houses and move out when there is happiness in the house. An adorable character.

totoro-soot-sprites

I used yarn and made my own. I made a LOT of yarn balls, 179 in fact. I spread them all over the floor in the party room by tossing them all over the place. I made a few different sizes in the beginning, but it was easier and faster to make them all the same. I considered adding eyeballs to them all, but I couldn’t find enough goggley eyes!

totoro 3rd birthday party decorating

Then we had people guess how many there were. We kept track of the guesses on the white board. The guests had fun drawing and decorating the board for me. Funny thing was we had a tie for the winner! 7 above and 7 below! AND they were a married couple so they shared the prize!

totoro 3rd birthday party guess how many soot sprites

I had prizes for each game, a smaller totoro puzzle, and of course party favors. In the movie Totoro gives the cute little girls a folded bamboo leave with various nuts in it. So I made over 40 of my own bamboo/nut packages and attached a totoro cell phone charm to it. They all seems tickled with the idea of a favor and the whole party went over well!

totoro 3rd birthday party favors

Since they like healthy food in Japan we mostly had fruits and veggies, but I did make my own totoro shaped cookie cutters and made cookies and cupcakes. BUT my camera died. TOTALLY died. Most of these pictures are from the night before the party when I was setting up and a few from my in law’s camera the day of the party. BUT this is the only picture of the food. Sad, I know! There always seems to be that one thing that when I sit down to blog about a party of craft I realized I didn’t get a shot of! SO frustrating! But it is what it is! Over all the birthday girl had a great day, my in laws had fun, the members of our church and neighbors all enjoyed participating in an American birthday party and I was happy with how well it went. Can’t ask for more than that!
