One of the very best things about living here is being so close to so many family members. Obviously there are my mother and father in law upstairs along with a sister in law, but I also have an amazing Sister in law just 4 exits down the freeway. We love to spend as many Friday nights with each other as we can, with the kids playing and us adults enjoying each others company (she’s hilarious!)

Anyway we also get to spend time together for family birthday dinners. Last week was my nephews birthday. We got together for just dessert, and I offered to make a simple cake. He requested chocolate cake and vanilla frosting! Beyond that it didn’t matter. So I had a ton of sprinkles left from my Ice Cream Parlor birthday party and having seen this adorable cake with sprinkles at the great cake company I decided it was the perfect time to try it out!!!

Then as I was taking pictures I moved it to quickly and it FLIPPED OVER!!!! GAH!!!! Luckily the cake didn’t break, so I flipped it back, re-spread the frosting, intermixed with sprinkles now, and re-sprinkled it! It worked great (and of course tasted amazing- and that’s all that really matters, right?)

Here is how I sprinkled it: I tilted a FRESHLY frosted cake, poured a pile of sprinkles into my hand and put it against the bottom of the cake and then brought my hand up the cake, pressing in the sprinkles as I went. For the top I poured a pile on and softly spread it around, pouring more where I needed it.

Pretty simple, BOTH times I did it! And quick to, an easy last min cake decoration if you need one! AND I have to say but I kind of LOVED the extra texture of the sprinkles in the frosting! I might just do that under the fondant in my next cake for FUN!

  1. This is so pretty! I have a TON of Valentine sprinkles leftover (sadly from LAST year, ha ha ha) and a little girl’s birthday coming up. I wanted to do your ombre cake in pink for her. Maybe I will use the sprinkles on the outside. Thanks!

    • I won’t even TELL you how old some of my sprinkles are…. WAY older than one year though… I love the idea of the ombre and sprinkles! How fun!!!

  2. Love the sprinkles cake Ash. So fun and colorful. :)
    xoxo

  3. WHat a fun idea! It’s so pretty!

    • I agree!!! I’d love to do it in all valentines sprinkles too, or maybe all CHOCOLATE sprinkles… Mmmmm I think I have my future birthday cake planned out now…

  4. How big of a mess was this!? You go Ashley, the Party’s look awesome! I voted!!

    • I had a cookie sheet underneath along with parchment paper so I could collect and reuse the sprinkles that fell easily. So really not much of a mess! My tilting turn table for cakes helped too, so it all fell the same way!

  5. Oh.My.Word. This is MY kind of cake! Whenever we go get icecream from a shop, I LOAD it down with sprinkles. I can’t get enough of them. Never thought to do this! My birthday is in June. I just may have to have a sprinkle birthday cake!!

    • This is for SURE you kind of cake then!!! You might even want to mix the sprinkles into the frosting ON PURPOSE, even in the middle of the layers too!

  6. So pretty and looks so yummy

  7. This looks awesome Ashlee! So fun and festive!

  8. That turned out so neat! My three year old is in love with this cake, she keeps asking me to go back to the ‘lots of sprinkles cake’.

  9. Yum!!! Your cakes look amazing, I love the sprinkles, but the lego and robot would make my son go nuts!!

  10. My daughter would go nuts over this cake. Before she would even try ice cream as a toddler, she would eat a little cup of sprinkles at the ice cream shop. It took her a few years before she finally tried ice cream. She now loves ice cream but she’s still a sprinkle lover too :) .

    • Seems to be a lot of sprinkle lovers out there! Who knew? I like them, but apparently I don’t LOVE them! this cake has brought out some big fans!

  11. How fun and pretty!

  12. Ashlee! You are the cake queen!! This si so colorful and fun! Thanks for sharing at oopsey daisy!

  13. How fun!!! My shorties will LOVE this and it’s such a fun and easy way to decorate a cake! Thanks for sharing! (saw your cake on TipJunkie)

  14. This looks so amazingly delicious! I love sprinkles on anything, donuts, ice cream, CAKES, and valentines chocolates. So much so that when my man ate my valentine chocolate with the sprinkles, he got a stern talking to about how it is my favorite!

    • just wrong! My husband does it all the time, eat my favorite goodies when HIS snacks are just right over there- don’t touch my mint M&M’s…

  15. My daughter would think I was a super hero if I made this for her! She loves rainbows and sprinkles…I might just have to do this to see her reaction! I’m pinning this one!

  16. oh yum, and I love the idea of doing the sprinkle frosting under fondant!

    • Agreed, I added the chocolate sprinkles to my mint buttercream frosting for my ice cream cone cake and loved it! VERY fun addition to frosting!

  17. I love this cake! I’m planning a rainbow themed birthday party for my little girl. And I have a bit of a love affair with rainbow sprinkles. This will be a wonderful cake for her party!!!

  18. wow! this is amazing!! my followers would love to see it and you are welcome to link on my party on Tuesdays. It’s still open :) New follower of your blog :)

    • Thanks so much! Man I need to get on twitter more often, it’s just that something has to give and apparently twitter is that thing for me. I rarely get on anymore!

  20. What a great treat for any and all holidays. So customizable just by switching the sprinkles up. Thanks for sharing!

  21. This is amazing. I have never seen anything like it. My sister – n- law makes cakes & I have got to show her this! Found you thru the Sundae Scoop Link Up with Jamielyn! :D I hope this gets featured! <3 Good Luck!

    • Thanks so much! I couldn’t believe how fast it came together, esp since I had to decorate it twice after dropping the cake, great for last min party cakes!

  22. This looks fab! I love this trick for covering my not-so-uber-spectacular frosting jobs (or those with ugly colors of frosting, like dulce de leche). Thanks for sharing this pretty cake. Love your blog design too! Clean and chic.

  23. Perfect! Easier than decorating a cake and my kids love sprinkles.nom gonna pin it right now! In fact my 6 yr old dd just saw that and said “I want it! I want it!” thanks for the idea.

  24. Hi – I found your blog via Sew Chatty. I’m glad that I did. This is a great idea! My mom + I make cakes, so I will have to show her how cute this came out.

  25. Wow, you make beautiful cakes! This one looks really tall, and I really like that look. I was wondering if you could tell me the size round that you used and the number of layers…I’d really like to try this one out!

  26. how far in advance can i make this cake — i have a party on sunday, would friday be too early for a fresh cake?? never did the cakes for my girls’ parties before, so i am a nervous baker!

    • ummmmm I don’t like to make cakes more than a day before, but two days should be okay as long as you don’t refrigerate it. refrigeration dries cakes out really bad. so if you make it that far in advanced make sure you don’t use milk or butter in your frosting/filling so you can leave it out. also make sure the frosting is covering the cake completely to seal the cake part and keep it moist.

  27. Wow, super fat mode activated! It would be SO worth it, though.
