I grew up getting new ornaments every year. So when I got married I had 22 ornaments to take with me! It was a great way to get out tree started on the right foot. I have been making homemade ornaments with a star (one year snowflake) theme for the past couple of years! Here is my this years homemade star ornament!
I started with these amazing glass stars from Ikea (they also have hearts and angels), a spray bottle of water and Looking Glass (Mirror-like paint) from Krylon!
I left the stars in the cases they came in, with the ribbons tucked underneath. First spray it with water! The more you spray the bigger the droplets so it’s all up to you, and what kind of style your looking for.
Then spray a few layers of the looking glass spray RIGHT on top of the water! If you want a more swirly effect you can move your ornaments around at this point. I like the droplet look so I left it like this. Although I wish I had swirled one so I could show you.
And here is the front! Quick and easy!!! I made 12 and they took all of 3 mins MAYBE (that includes shaking the can for a full 2 mins).

It’s been fun to play with! It doesn’t work so well as a mirror, but it is fun for vases and stuff!
I RAN to my Ikea to get these, and they don’t sell them there! Then I went to Michael’s, Craft Warehouse, and nothing!

I had the hardest time finding them at my Ikea. I called ahead, asked half a dozen people where they were, no one knew. TONS of work! Here is the product number, that might help! Snovita- 301.758.33 Call and give them this number and see if they have any! Good luck!
Always wondered if there was a way to create the mercury glass look. Cool!
It’s super easy too, hard to mess up. I wish I had more of a run off look. So this last week I tried it again with a cake stand. If you spray the water AFTER the paint then it cracks. I liked the look of it overall… It was fun to try something new.

Oh my…I have only looked to Limbo and back for that paint. Love these stars….oh and we share the ornament tradition. My mom gave my sis and I new ornaments every year.

I had a hard time finding it the first time too. I called around to a few stores, rather than drive around. Now I don’t remember where I finally found it, Home depot, lowes, walmart… It’s by Krylon, if that helps!
Where do you get the ornaments that you used. Sorry but crafting is new to me.

Ikea last year, I don’t know if they still have them, but they had a few other shapes as well, but I tend to do stars every year. Kind of my theme!
Will this work on plastic too or just on glass?
I’m not sure honestly. I think it would depend on what the spray paint works on. If the spray sticks to the plastic than the technique should work out okay
What is “IKEA” and how do I contact them, thanks I lovemurcury glass” I have a few Old pieces and a 8″ snowman. I really want to try that. what type of plastic are they made of, just in case I con’t find the ones you used. i am new to your site and hope to come back,
ikea is a store http://www.ikea.com/ These were from last year, so I don’t know that they’ll have the glass ornaments this year. They are GLASS, so any flat glass ornament would work. I don’t think this effect would work on plastic, the paint would stick of course, but I think too well, I don’t think the water/paint/mercury effect would work on the plastic at all.
When spraying “a few layers of the paint”, do you let each layer dry some before spraying again? Or do you spray it all at once. This looks so wonderful!
dry first, but it doesn’t take long at all!!! Just a few mins to dry to the touch and then you can spray again!

your welcome! Again it was in last years inventory, so who knows what they have this year, but any store that carries glass ornaments would work! And if you really don’t like it you can scrap it off, after all it’s just paint!
If anyone tries this mercuryglass look on plastic, please let us know. I’m sure plastic is a lot less expensive than glass
I can’t see it working as well on plastic, the water wouldn’t bead up and create the shapes the same. but totally worth trying, right?
