Update: I have gotten so many questions and inquiries about these invitations I did a more indepth post on how I made them. I hope it helps and I hope it answers your questions!

So I got the idea for a book from this blogger, Michelle and she ordered and designed them with/from Cassandra on Etsy. Anyway, I took the idea of a book and ran with it.  Of course I wrote my own story. So I bought blank cards from a scrapbooking section. That was a BIG mistake! They weren’t sized properly for my printer and even the custom setting didn’t work! It was a major pain but in the end I worked it out. Next time I’ll buy the printer friendly blank cards!

To design the cards I used Microsoft Publisher. I have to say I LOVE publisher. I publish a family newsletter every 4 months on it, do my business cards, labels, stickers, Christmas cards etc… All on publisher. I also use Photoshop for a lot of projects, but publisher is easier to use for some projects. I print all my envelopes with publisher too, using a homemade address book from excel.

When they were done printing I put the two cards together, so it’s 8 front and back pages. I wanted them to stay together so I used a sewing machine to sew them together. It was easy, fast and fun! The back page had all the information on the party. They turned out even BETTER than I’d hoped. AND they were still light enough that they only took one stamp! I am SOOO exciting for this party, it’s coming together really well!

Hi! I know that this invitation is over a year old, but I am OBSESSED with it! I’m planning my son’s first birthday party and wanted to know if you sell the template for it and the envelope. I’m nowhere near as crafty as you are so I know there’s no chance I’d be able to do this on my own! Please let me know. I’d really appreciate the help! Thanks!

    • I don’t sell the template because of copyright issues. I really don’t want to get into any trouble. As I said in the post and in the other comments, it did take time, but it wasn’t necessarily hard. I scanned in pages from the book and used Photoshop (any photo editing will work) out the words. Then filled in my own wording! I used images from both the Cat in the Hat and the Cat in the Hat returns, because I wanted images with snow for my party invitations.

    HI,
I’M ALSO PLANNING MY SON’S 1ST BIRTHDAY AND WAS WONDERING WHERE YOU GOT THE IMAGES FROM?

    • I scanned them in from the books then used photoshop to take out the words, and the little boy (since I just wanted the little girl in my invitations.

  3. This is such an awesome idea! I’m also planning my son’s first birthday! I actually decided on the theme before i knew how popular it was ;) (little did i know hehe) I’m going to try to make the invitations :) Wish me luck they turn out half as good as yours ;)

    • Good Luck! They did take time to put together, but they were SO worth it. I wish I’d taken pictures during and done a tutorial on it. My favorite invitations by far!

  4. Hello. SUch a great idea? Was wondering if you sold the invitations?

    • thanks! And no I don’t. Copyright issues and all that, I don’t want to get in trouble. I’m happy to answer more questions and tell you more about what I did though. So ask away!

  5. I agree, I am obsessed with this invitation. Since you wont sell it, would you mind sharing your wording or post pictures of the other pages?

    • Again, I can’t share too much, and certainly not larger or more detailed pictures because of copyright issues. Plus the images and wording I used was specific to the time of year and what was going on in our lives. I used images from both the Cat int he Hat and the Cat in the Hat returns using the snowed in house (because we were just coming out of winter here in UT) so my images and wording wouldn’t really apply to anyone else. I’ll as my cousin (a lawyer) how much more I can share without getting into a lot of trouble. I wouldn’t be so nervous but I’ve had other blogger friends get into quite a bit of trouble over pretty simple stuff like this!

    Hey!
You did a wonderful job! Just wondered if there was a specific needle you used or an industrial sewing machine or anything fancy? We are making a quilt for my sons first birthday but I really wanted to sew the booklet invitations together as well but am nervous about ruining the sewing machine.

    Thanks
    Shannon

    • not at all, I used the longest stitch, with the needle I had on there, a universal. A sharp needle works best, so maybe a new one if yours is getting dull, but honestly needles go through paper easier than some fabrics! Just take it nice and slow til you feel comfortable! I sew on paper all the time! I hope it’s super fun for you!
