Ruffled Buttercream Birthday Smash Cake

I know I sound like a broken record, but I love decorating cakes for family and friends.  This little 1st birthday party smake cake was for my sweet, chubby, adorable niece!  I actually love how this cake turned out.  I love these vertical ruffles SO much, it’s one of my favorite buttercream piping techniques.  And of course these pictures are taken by the amazing Chelsea Peterson Photography (she also made the cute baby)

The ruffles, smooth top, and all in white? so pretty!  This is with my super secret buttercream recipe.  I’ve been working on it for years, it’s a mix between american buttercream (which is too sweet for me) and swiss merinque buttercream which doesn’t pipe well and is SUPER buttery.  I wanted something between, strong enough for piping, but super smooth and creamy.  Also not too sweet and not too buttery!

Orange Ruffled Smash Cake

I realized the other day (when I made the flipagram of the 50+ cakes I made last year) that I hadn’t shared this adorable smash cake session from last year! I love this whole session. The pinks and oranges go so well together, and the orchard is so pretty!

I used a vertical ruffle in a medium petal tip for this cake. It’s a 5 inch, white cake, super easy once you get the hang of ruffles. I wasn’t sure how well the orange would really look, it can be such a BRIGHT color. But I love how it turned out.

Family photography – smash cake session

YAY! my family pictures for the year are finally here.  I love doing something different every year.  So this year I wanted a fun family activity and lots of color.  So I gave the kids a choice, colored chalk or a family cake smash!!!  I’m lucky my amazing sister/photographer, Chelsea Peterson Photography, was so willing to go along with yet another crazy idea.

We started with a few “clean” shots before getting into the mess.  I spent a few weeks searching our area for the perfect backdrop.  We originally wanted a white wall but in the end I decided I wanted warmer tones and so when I found this beige brick wall I fell in love.

Ombre Ruffled Buttercream Cake

Making all the smash cakes this last year have been SO much fun!  This one is no exception.  It’s tighter ruffles than the previous cakes, with a slight ombre effect.  I love that the ombre is stronger at the bottom rather than perfectly even up the sides.

I made this cake for Lyndsey Fagerlund (and she took all the pictures, I just made the cake) for her own baby’s first birthday!  And the really fun part?  Lyndsey was on Good Things Utah talking about capturing children’s birthday parties, and this cake was featured!  You can see the video here.
