Blue Ombre Smash Cake

So this is VERY similar to my orange ombre cake, but this time I also fill in the top of the cake!

Here is the pin I used for my inspiration, you can see that they cut into their “drops” more, mine is more…  full..

These drops are a good boys smash cake, over ruffles, but I’d still like another style I could use for boys as well, rather than repeat this one over and over again!

To start add some frosting to the cake circle…

Add your layer of cake…

pipe on some buttercream…

And smooth it out with a angled cake spatula… add the rest of your layers and filling.

Crumb coat the cake!  If your going to leave the top plain make sure it has more than a crumb coat on it!

I used my large round tip to mark how far apart I wanted my rows, on the side and the top.

hold the tip against the cake side, squeeze until frosting creates a full circle of frosting

Pull across creating one of two options, either a drag mark, like the pinterest image, OR a more tear drop shape, like my cake.  continue around overlapping until you get to the end, then around the top.  add some blue dye and do the next row, add more blue dye and do the next and the next and the next…

And your done! I ended with a circle in the center of the top!

blue-ombre-buttercream-smash-cake-back

And just to keep it real check out the back!!!  A total mess, right?  If you REALLY care about the back you can use a dry brush and once the buttercream has crusted over you can fix it up a bit, but since this was just a smash cake and only needed to look good from one side I didn’t bother!
